Where to go

Twelve towns, four provinces, one small country

Nowhere in Rwanda is more than six hours from Kigali on tarmac. Pick by what you want to do, not by how far it looks.

Base camp for the volcanoes and the gorillas

The town under the Virunga volcanoes. Almost everyone here is either heading up to trek gorillas or golden monkeys the next morning, or coming back down. Lodges run from backpacker rooms to some of Africa's most expensive suites, and the town itself has become a genuinely good place to eat.

Travelling Rwanda beyond the capital

Is it easy to travel around Rwanda without a car?

Yes. Intercity coaches run from Nyabugogo bus park in Kigali to every district town on tarmac roads, usually every 20–30 minutes, and fares are fixed by the regulator. The gaps are the national parks, where you need a vehicle or a lodge transfer.

How long do I need to see Rwanda beyond Kigali?

Five days lets you add either the volcanoes or Lake Kivu. Ten days covers the full Kivu Belt with Nyungwe. Two weeks lets you add Akagera and the southern heritage towns without rushing.

Which town is best for Lake Kivu?

Rubavu for beaches, restaurants and nightlife; Karongi for quiet coves and islands; Rusizi for the rainforest combination. All three connect by boat and by the Kivu Belt road.

Do I need a 4x4?

Not for the main highways, which are tarmac and in good condition. You do want one inside Akagera and on the rougher approaches around Burera and Nyagatare in the rains.

About these prices

Bus fares follow the intercity tariff published by the transport regulator; room ranges are typical published rates for each town. Last reviewed September 2026.
