Local buffets (mélange) run about $3–5 at lunch and are the best value in town. A sit-down dinner at a hotel restaurant is usually $10–20. Fresh brochettes, isombe and tilapia are the reliable orders; a Primus or Skol costs about $1.50.

Practical

Everything else you need to know

Getting there

Two and a half hours from Kigali via Kayonza on good tarmac.

Getting around

Distances are long and flat. Hire a car; motos are fine in town but not for the cooperatives out on the district roads.

Money and costs

Rooms run $15–70 a night and a full day in town costs about $92. Carry cash for motos, markets and guides.

When to go

Dry season; the black-cotton roads get sticky in the rains.

Respect and safety

Cooperatives are workplaces. Call ahead through a guide rather than turning up with a camera.

What to pack

Sun protection, dust mask for the dry season, closed shoes for farmyards.

Before you go

  • Black-cotton roads turn to glue in the rains; go in the dry season or stay on tarmac.
  • The northern Akagera gate is closer to Nyagatare than to Kigali — useful if you are coming from Uganda.
  • Accommodation is simple and cheap; expect a guesthouse, not a lodge.
  • Border markets are busiest early; go before nine.
