At a glance

Gorilla permits
$1,500 per person, capped daily — the best operators hold allocations or know when released permits drop.
Group sizes
Gorilla treks are capped at 8 per family. Safari vehicles run 4–7; private is always an option.
Best seasons
June–September and December–February are driest. Rainy months mean lower prices and empty parks.
Booking lead time
Gorilla permits sell out 3–6 months ahead in high season; Akagera and Nyungwe can be arranged in weeks.

Before you book an operator

Permits before flights

Lock in gorilla permits before booking anything else — they are the fixed point every other date bends around. Operators listed here can check live availability.

What's usually included

Multi-day quotes typically bundle vehicle, driver-guide, park fees and lodging. Permits, drinks, tips and community visits are often extra — ask for the line items.

Fitness and gear

Gorilla and chimp treks can mean 2–6 hours on steep, muddy forest trails. Gaiters, gloves and a porter (around $20) are the best money you'll spend.

Tipping and etiquette

Guides and trackers run on tips: $10–20 per guest per day is a fair benchmark. Always ask before photographing people, and dress for mud, not for photos.
