Pick your base
Rwanda is small, but where you sleep shapes the trip. Five regions, five very different mornings.

The city everyone starts and ends in
Kigali
Almost every trip begins here, because the international airport is fifteen minutes from the centre. Stay in Kiyovu or Nyarugenge if you want to walk to restaurants and the memorial; Kimihurura if you are working around the Convention Centre. Traffic is light by regional standards, and a moto or taxi across town rarely takes more than twenty minutes.

Where the gorilla treks leave from
Volcanoes & Musanze
Trekking groups gather at Kinigi park headquarters at 7am sharp, so where you sleep the night before decides how early you wake. Musanze town, twenty-five minutes away, has the mid-range and budget rooms; the lodges along the park wall are minutes from the briefing and price accordingly. Nights are cold at 2,000 metres — a fireplace is not decoration here.

Savannah, lakes and the only big-five park
Akagera
Two and a half hours east of Kigali, Akagera is lake-and-acacia country where lion and rhino have been reintroduced. Northern camps sit closest to the best game; the southern lodges near Lake Ihema are cheaper and better for families and self-drivers. Game drives leave at first light, so staying inside the gate saves you an hour of road.

Rainforest, chimpanzees and the canopy walk
Nyungwe
Nyungwe is a five-hour drive from Kigali through the tea hills, or a short hop to Kamembe airstrip. Chimp tracking briefings start at 5am at Uwinka or Cyamudongo, so almost everyone stays around Gisakura at the western edge. Expect rain most afternoons and cool, damp nights all year.

Where Rwandans go to slow down
Lake Kivu
Kivu is the resting half of a Rwandan itinerary: warm, bilharzia-free water, no crocodiles or hippos, and long sunsets over the islands. Rubavu (Gisenyi) in the north has the beaches and is an easy hour from Musanze; Karongi (Kibuye) in the middle is quieter and prettier, with boat trips out to Napoleon Island.

Practical notes
What all-inclusive means here
At Rwandan lodges the rate usually covers all meals, house drinks, laundry, park transfers and guiding — but never the gorilla permit itself, which is bought separately through the Rwanda Development Board.
Seasons and pricing
June to September and mid-December to February are dry and busiest. The long rains in March–May bring the lowest rates of the year and green, empty parks; roads to the lodges stay passable.
Timing your first night
Trekking briefings start at 7am and Akagera game drives at 6am. If you are flying in the day before, sleep in Kigali and drive up in the afternoon rather than doing both in one morning.
About these rates
Prices are indicative per room per night, taken from published rack rates, and move with the season. Confirm directly with the property or ask our trip desk for a quote.
