Musanze

Two hours north of Kigali the road stops climbing and the Virunga chain fills the windscreen. Musanze is a working farm town that happens to sit at the foot of the most famous mountains in Rwanda — and it wakes up long before you do.

Best for: Trekkers, first-timers, photographers

The town under the Virunga volcanoes. Almost everyone here is either heading up to trek gorillas or golden monkeys the next morning, or coming back down. Lodges run from backpacker rooms to some of Africa's most expensive suites, and the town itself has become a genuinely good place to eat.

Why go

  • Volcanoes National Park headquarters at Kinigi
  • Musanze caves and the Buhanga sacred forest
  • Twin Lakes Burera and Ruhondo
  • Iby'Iwacu / Gorilla Guardians cultural village

02 — Where to stay

Where to stay

Plan on $25–320 a night depending on how much comfort you want. Budget guesthouses cluster near the bus park; the better hotels and lodges sit slightly out of the centre. Most visitors stay 1–3 nights.

03 — Eating and drinking

Eating and drinking

Local buffets (mélange) run about $3–5 at lunch and are the best value in town. A sit-down dinner at a hotel restaurant is usually $10–20. Fresh brochettes, isombe and tilapia are the reliable orders; a Primus or Skol costs about $1.50.

The trails above Kinigi are wet even in the dry months. Boots you don't mind ruining, and a stick from the porters.

04 — Getting there and around

Getting there and around

Two hours by tarmac from Kigali. Virunga Express and Ritco run buses from Nyabugogo roughly every 30 minutes.

In town, motos cost roughly $0.50–1.50 for a short hop; agree the price before you climb on. Private car hire with a driver runs $60–100 a day.

Practical

Everything else you need to know

Getting there

Two hours by tarmac from Kigali. Virunga Express and Ritco run buses from Nyabugogo roughly every 30 minutes.

Getting around

Motos handle everything inside town for RWF 500–1,500. For Kinigi, the caves or the Twin Lakes, hire a car and driver for the day — the lodges arrange this, and it is the only sensible way to make a 06:00 park briefing.

Money and costs

Rooms run $25–320 a night and a full day in town costs about $172. Carry cash for motos, markets and guides.

When to go

June–September and December–February for firmer trekking trails.

Respect and safety

Ask before photographing people, especially at the park briefing. Plastic bags are banned nationwide — leave them at home.

What to pack

Waterproof jacket, gaiters or long trousers, gloves for the nettles, and cash in dollars for porters and permits.

Before you go

  • Book gorilla permits months ahead through RDB; golden monkey permits are usually available at short notice.
  • Confirm your pickup time with the lodge the night before — the Kinigi briefing starts at 07:00 sharp.
  • Bring USD 20 in small notes for a porter; it is the best money you will spend on the mountain.
  • Nights at 1,850m are cold. A fleece is not optional.
