Where to stay

Plan on $20–180 a night depending on how much comfort you want. Budget guesthouses cluster near the bus park; the better hotels and lodges sit slightly out of the centre. Most visitors stay 2 nights.

03 — Eating and drinking

Eating and drinking

Local buffets (mélange) run about $3–5 at lunch and are the best value in town. A sit-down dinner at a hotel restaurant is usually $10–20. Fresh brochettes, isombe and tilapia are the reliable orders; a Primus or Skol costs about $1.50.

Practical

Everything else you need to know

Getting there

Three hours from Kigali via Muhanga; boats connect Karongi to Rubavu and Rusizi.

Getting around

The town spreads over three headlands, so take motos rather than walking with luggage. Boats are hired at the jetty by the hour or the half day.

Money and costs

Rooms run $20–180 a night and a full day in town costs about $137. Carry cash for motos, markets and guides.

When to go

June–September for calm water and clear ridge views.

Respect and safety

Bisesero Genocide Memorial is a place of mourning, not a sightseeing stop. Dress modestly and follow your guide.

What to pack

Dry bag, sun hat, a warm layer for the boat home after sunset.

Before you go

  • Agree the boat price and the return time before you leave the jetty.
  • Napoleon Island's bat colony is best at dusk — plan the trip late, not at midday.
  • Restaurants close early outside the hotels; eat by 21:00.
  • The Kivu Belt road south to Rusizi takes longer than the map suggests. Leave in the morning.
