02 — Where to stay

Where to stay

Plan on $30–400 a night depending on how much comfort you want. Budget guesthouses cluster near the bus park; the better hotels and lodges sit slightly out of the centre. Most visitors stay 2–3 nights.

03 — Eating and drinking

Eating and drinking

Local buffets (mélange) run about $3–5 at lunch and are the best value in town. A sit-down dinner at a hotel restaurant is usually $10–20. Fresh brochettes, isombe and tilapia are the reliable orders; a Primus or Skol costs about $1.50.

Igishigishigi means 'tree fern'. The trail is named for these, and they are everywhere.

04 — Getting there and around

Getting there and around

Four hours from Kigali via Huye. Most visitors arrange a lodge transfer rather than using buses.

In town, motos cost roughly $0.50–1.50 for a short hop; agree the price before you climb on. Private car hire with a driver runs $60–100 a day.

05 — When to go

When to go

June–September for trails; chimp tracking is best in the wet season when they feed low.

Two days, roughly

Nyamagabe in two days

Chimpanzees before dawn, a canopy walkway seventy metres up, and the hardest memorial in the country.

Day 01

Arrive and walk the canopy

Four hours via Huye, then straight into the forest

  • 07:00Kigali to Huye to Nyungwe — Horizon or Ritco to Huye, then a park transfer. Most lodges will collect you.
  • 12:00Uwinka reception — Pay fees, meet your ranger and leave bags at the lodge.
  • 14:00Canopy walkway — Sixty metres of suspended bridge above a ravine. Not for anyone shaky about heights.
  • 17:30Colobus at the forest edge — Habituated Angolan colobus troops feed near the road at dusk.

Day 02

Chimps, then Murambi

A 05:00 start and an afternoon of history

  • 04:30Pre-dawn briefing — Trackers locate the group at first call; you follow on foot through wet forest.
  • 09:30Kamiranzovu waterfall trail — A marsh, a waterfall and orchids, on a mostly flat six-kilometre loop.
  • 13:30Murambi Genocide Memorial — At Gikongoro. Preserved and confronting; allow ninety minutes and a quiet hour after.
  • 16:30On to Huye or Kigali — Huye is an hour away for a softer end to the day.

Practical

Everything else you need to know

Getting there

Four hours from Kigali via Huye. Most visitors arrange a lodge transfer rather than using buses.

Getting around

There is no useful public transport to trailheads. Nearly everyone uses a lodge vehicle or a hired car; park guides meet you at the reception points.

Money and costs

Rooms run $30–400 a night and a full day in town costs about $197. Carry cash for motos, markets and guides.

When to go

June–September for trails; chimp tracking is best in the wet season when they feed low.

Respect and safety

Murambi Genocide Memorial is nearby and profoundly heavy. Visit it separately from a forest day, not after one.

What to pack

Serious rain gear, gaiters, long sleeves, binoculars and a dry bag for the camera.

Before you go

  • Chimp tracking starts at 05:00 — you must sleep near the park, not in Huye.
  • Trail fees and guide fees are separate; carry the exact amounts.
  • Wet feet are guaranteed. Bring a second pair of shoes for the evening.
  • Phone signal is patchy inside the park; tell someone your plan.
