Rwanda's best routes, on any budget
Rwanda is small — you can cross it in a day — but each road leads somewhere very different: mountain gorillas, a lake coast, rainforest or savannah. This guide lays out five routes, what each costs, and real places to stay and eat along the way.

Route 1 · 1–2 days
Kigali city
- Arrive at Kigali International Airport (about 20–30 min to the centre)
- Short moto or taxi hops
- From about US$40/day on a shoestring
- • Kigali Genocide Memorial (Gisozi)
- • Kimironko market
- • Nyamirambo walking tour
- • Car-Free Sunday on the first and third Sunday mornings

Route 2 · 2–3 days
Kigali → Musanze & Volcanoes
- Kigali–Musanze road (NR4), about 95 km
- About 2–2.5 hours by car or express bus
- Cheap without a gorilla permit; the permit alone is US$1,500
- • Gorilla or golden monkey trekking
- • Twin lakes Burera and Ruhondo
- • Musanze caves
- • Dian Fossey tomb hike

Route 3 · 3–5 days
Lake Kivu: Rubavu → Karongi → Rusizi
- Musanze–Rubavu, then the lakeshore road south; the Congo-Nile Trail follows the same shore
- Rubavu–Karongi about 3 hours; Karongi–Rusizi about 3 hours
- Mid-range lake hotels; guesthouses and public buses keep it low
- • Beaches and sunsets in Rubavu
- • Boat trips to Napoleon's and Amahoro islands
- • Coffee washing stations
- • Cycling or hiking the Congo-Nile Trail

Route 4 · 3–4 days
Kigali → Huye → Nyungwe
- Kigali–Huye road (NR1), then west into Nyungwe
- Kigali–Huye about 2.5–3 hours; Huye–Nyungwe about 2–3 hours
- Huye is budget-friendly; Nyungwe lodges and permits cost more
- • Ethnographic Museum in Huye
- • King's Palace at Nyanza on the way
- • Nyungwe canopy walkway
- • Chimpanzee tracking and tea estates

Route 5 · 1–2 days
Kigali → Akagera
- Kigali–Kayonza road east to the park's south gate
- About 2.5–3 hours each way
- Park entry plus a 4x4 is the main cost — share a car to split it
- • Big Five self-drive safari
- • Boat trip on Lake Ihema
- • Night game drives
- • Easy day trip from Kigali
The 7–10 day loop
Kigali (1–2 nights) → Musanze for Volcanoes (2 nights) → Rubavu (1–2 nights) → down the lake to Karongi (1–2 nights) → Nyungwe (2 nights) → back through Huye to Kigali. Add Akagera as a day or overnight trip from Kigali at the start or end.

Money-saving tips
- Use MTN MoMo or Airtel Money — most shops, motos and buses accept mobile money; carry some cash in Rwandan francs for small towns.
- Visa cards work in Kigali hotels and larger restaurants; outside Kigali, cards are less common.
- Express buses (Volcano, Ritco and others) run from Nyabugogo bus park and cost a fraction of a private car.
- Book gorilla, chimp and park activities directly through Visit Rwanda or the park — prices are set by the parks.
- Travel in the long dry season (June–September) or the short one (December–February) for easier roads and trekking.
- Plan around Umuganda: on the last Saturday of the month, most shops and roads close from 8am to 11am.
- Single-use plastic bags are banned — pack a cloth bag.
Questions travellers ask
How many days do I need for Rwanda?
Seven to ten days lets you combine Kigali, Volcanoes, Lake Kivu and either Nyungwe or Akagera without rushing. Three to four days covers Kigali plus one park.
Can I travel Rwanda by public bus?
Yes. Express buses connect Kigali's Nyabugogo bus park with Musanze, Rubavu, Karongi, Huye and Rusizi. You need a car or tour to get inside the national parks.
What is the cheapest way to see gorillas?
There is no discount on the gorilla permit in Rwanda. To save, stay in Musanze town instead of Kinigi lodges and travel by bus or shared car.
Are prices on this page exact?
No. Daily budgets are approximate and change with season and exchange rates. Always confirm permit fees and room rates before you book.
