04 — The big line items
What the day totals leave out
Park permits and vehicle hire are the two costs that decide a Rwandan budget. They are listed separately so you can add only the ones you will actually buy.

05 — Practical desk
When to go, and how to move
Best time to travel
April to June for the coffee harvest and green hills; June to September for the easiest roads.
Getting around
Almost all of this works by coach. A car gives you the tea estates and roadside stops the buses pass by.
Know before you book
- ·Umuganda closes roads on the last Saturday morning of each month.
- ·Ask before photographing people, especially at memorials and markets.
- ·Cooperative visits need a day's notice — arrange them through your host.
06 — Quick answers
Before you commit
Is this trip suitable without any hiking?
Yes. The hardest walking is a tea-estate path and a museum floor.
Can I add a park at the end?
Akagera adds two days from Kigali and does not disturb the rest of the route.
