04 — The big line items
What the day totals leave out
Park permits and vehicle hire are the two costs that decide a Rwandan budget. They are listed separately so you can add only the ones you will actually buy.

05 — Practical desk
When to go, and how to move
Best time to travel
The lake is warm year round. June to September gives the driest roads; the short rains in November turn the tea estates an unreasonable green.
Getting around
Coaches connect all three lake towns, but they take the inland routes at times. Hire a car or a driver for at least the Rubavu–Karongi–Rusizi legs if the views are the point.
Know before you book
- ·Lake Kivu is bilharzia-free and safe to swim; the wind picks up hard after 10am.
- ·The belt road is tarmac but slow — allow four hours for what the map calls two.
- ·Nyungwe activities must be booked and paid before you arrive at the gate.
06 — Quick answers
Before you commit
Which lake town should I choose if I only have one?
Rubavu for restaurants and nightlife, Karongi for quiet and islands, Rusizi if you are combining with Nyungwe.
Can I do the belt road by boat?
Partly. Passenger boats link Rubavu, Karongi and Rusizi on a slow schedule; check departures locally the day before.
