04 — The big line items

What the day totals leave out

Park permits and vehicle hire are the two costs that decide a Rwandan budget. They are listed separately so you can add only the ones you will actually buy.

Any national park permitDeliberately excluded — add one activity if the budget allows.—
The public beach at Rubavu
Rubavu's public beach is free, and the sunset costs nothing at all.

05 — Practical desk

When to go, and how to move

Best time to travel

The rains are the cheapest time and rooms are negotiable. Roads stay passable on the trunk routes year round.

Getting around

Coaches for everything intercity, motos in town. Pay motos with a fare agreed before you get on, or use a ride-hailing app.

Know before you book

  • ·Fares are regulated and posted — you should not be bargaining on a coach.
  • ·Carry cash for guesthouses outside Kigali; cards are patchy.
  • ·Book coach seats at the counter the day before on Fridays and Sundays.

06 — Quick answers

Before you commit

How cheaply can this be done?

Switch the budget tier below to Shoestring to see the day-by-day figure; a guesthouse bed, buffet meals and coach fares are what it assumes.

Is it safe to travel this way?

Rwanda is one of the safest countries in the region for independent travel. Normal night-travel caution still applies.
