04 — The big line items
What the day totals leave out
Park permits and vehicle hire are the two costs that decide a Rwandan budget. They are listed separately so you can add only the ones you will actually buy.

05 — Practical desk
When to go, and how to move
Best time to travel
June to September for trails and roads; December to February is drier than most people expect and quieter on the lake.
Getting around
Coaches handle every leg here. A hired car saves about three hours across the week and unlocks the belt-road stops.
Know before you book
- ·The Musanze–Rubavu road is short but slow; leave by 09:00.
- ·Karongi to Kigali is the longest single drive of the week — start early.
- ·Bank on one wet afternoon, whatever the season, and plan it as a lake day.
06 — Quick answers
Before you commit
Could I add Akagera to a week?
You can, but it costs the lake. Seven days does mountains and water well; ten days does mountains, water and savannah.
How much walking is involved?
One demanding forest morning; everything else is optional and gentle.
