Live music and jazz nights in Kigali
You do not have to time a trip around a festival to hear live Rwandan music. Most weeks Kigali has bands, jazz sessions, open mics and DJ nights across a handful of dependable venues, with programmes announced a few days ahead on venue social pages.
Most weeks, with the strongest programme Thursday to Saturday.
Most nights from about 19:00; weekend sets run late
Kimihurura, Nyarutarama and the Car Free Zone

Weekend markets and craft fairs
Rwanda's markets are open through the week, but weekends are when they become an event: busier aisles, more tailors at work, and pop-up craft fairs where cooperatives and designers sell directly.
Every weekend, with Saturday mornings the busiest; craft fairs are announced ahead.
Saturday and Sunday daytime, usually 09:00–17:00
Kimironko, Nyamirambo and pop-up craft fairs
Weekly events are the easiest to catch because they do not need an announcement. Saturday and Sunday belong to the markets: Kimironko for produce and fabric, Nyamirambo for street life, plus craft fairs that pop up at hotels and cultural venues. Thursday to Saturday evenings belong to live music, from jazz sets in Kimihurura to full bands near the Car Free Zone.
Line-ups are announced week by week on venue social pages, so treat the venue as the plan and the act as a bonus. Arrive by 20:00 for a seat; sets often start later than advertised.
Markets reward the opposite habit: go early, before the heat and the crowds, and bring small notes. Bargaining is normal, good-humoured and expected on fabric and crafts, less so on food.
Weekend-heavy
Saturday is the busiest day of the week for both markets and music.
Late starts
Advertised music times are optimistic. Doors at 19:00 usually means a first set closer to 21:00.
Cash first
Stalls and smaller venues run on cash and mobile money.
Before you go
- Which market is best for crafts?
- Kimironko has the widest range of fabric and baskets; hotel craft fairs are calmer and slightly pricier.
- Is live music ticketed?
- Small venues usually charge nothing or a modest cover; larger concerts are ticketed separately.
