The plan

Hour by hour in Ngoma

Kibungo, the old name most Rwandans still use, is the market and college town of the south-east. It is the practical overnight stop between Kigali, Akagera's southern gate and the Rusumo border, with cheap rooms, a big produce market and the Rukumberi wetlands nearby.

Photograph from the Rwandan side of the bridge; the border post itself is off limits to cameras.
