Trade fairs, expos and the convention season
Rwanda has quietly become one of Africa's most reliable convention cities. Between government summits, pan-African congresses and the long-running Kigali International Trade Fair, visitors arrive in Kigali for business reasons year-round — and the calendar around those events is where travellers find the city at its busiest and most lively.

What happens, and why it matters
The Kigali International Trade Fair is the anchor of the season. Held at the expo grounds in Gikondo, it brings exhibitors from across the region — agriculture, manufacturing, banking, home goods, vehicles — and runs for roughly two weeks in the July–August window. It is part trade show, part family day out: food stalls, product launches and school groups in the aisles.
The Kigali Convention Centre and the wider conference circuit keep the city busy through much of the year. When a major summit is on, hotels fill quickly, traffic around the city centre thickens, and taxi prices firm up. Check the city's conference calendar before you book a hotel if your dates are fixed.
For entrepreneurs, the fairs are the cheapest market research available in Rwanda. Walk the halls, see which products local distributors are stocking, and collect contacts from the dozens of small manufacturers who exhibit. The business directory on this site is a good way to follow up after the fair closes.
If you are attending rather than exhibiting, buy entry tickets at the gate, carry small notes for food stalls, and go on a weekday morning when the aisles are calm. Weekend evenings are when the fair becomes a social event.

Tickets and access
Trade-fair admission is normally sold at the gate. Conference registration and delegate access are handled separately by each organiser.
Getting there
Use a moto-taxi or ride-hailing service and allow extra time at peak hours. Parking and roads around major venues become congested.
Confirm before booking
Major summits can restrict traffic and access around the city centre for days. Build buffer time into airport transfers if your visit overlaps.
Local etiquette
- — Ask before photographing stands or products closely.
- — Carry small franc notes for admission and food stalls.
- — Collect names and context with business cards, not only photographs.
