Concerts, film screenings and fashion weeks
Kigali's music and arts calendar has grown into one of East Africa's most enjoyable. Stadium concerts, touring Afrobeats and gospel acts, a film festival that screens in the hills, and a fashion scene that shows both streetwear and traditional imigongo-inspired design all share the year.

What happens, and why it matters
Live music happens in two registers. Large ticketed concerts fill the BK Arena and open-air venues, headlined by regional stars and, increasingly, international touring acts brought in by festival promoters. Smaller venues around Nyarutarama, Kimihurura and the Car Free Zone host weekly live bands, jazz nights and open mics — follow venue social pages, since lineups are announced week by week.
Film has its own chapter here. Rwanda's festival circuit has historically taken screenings out of the cinema and into the hills — open-air shows in communities that rarely see a big screen. Screenings, panels and workshops tend to cluster in the middle of the year; check local listings during your visit.
Fashion is the fastest-moving scene. Kigali's designers show during seasonal fashion weeks and pop-up showcases, and the styles — from kitenge tailoring to avant-garde runway work — photograph beautifully. Ask before photographing models backstage; designers are generally welcoming to credited press.
The practical detail that matters most is transport after dark. Concerts run late, moto-taxis are plentiful but agree the fare first, and ride-hailing apps work in Kigali. If you are staying outside the city centre, plan your ride home before the encore.

Getting there
Arrange the journey home before the event ends. Ride-hailing and moto-taxis operate in Kigali, but demand rises after large shows.
Confirm before booking
Ticket sales and lineups are announced at short notice on social media. Follow venues and promoters for the current month rather than relying on annual calendars.
Local etiquette
- — Ask performers or organisers before backstage photography.
- — Credit designers, artists and venues when publishing images.
- — Keep valuables secure in dense concert crowds.
