Umuganura is Rwanda's ancient thanksgiving for the first harvest. Families brought the first sorghum to be blessed, and no one ate from the new harvest before the shared ceremony took place.
The festival was suppressed during the colonial period and revived as a national holiday, now observed on the first Friday of August, celebrating agricultural and national achievements together.
Modern Umuganura combines exhibitions of produce and crafts, cultural performance, and community reflection on the year's progress — a link between traditional gratitude and contemporary development goals.
