Ceremonies and cultural shows

Intore means 'the chosen ones'. Originally an elite corps trained at the royal court in warfare, poetry, and endurance, the Intore performed dances that dramatized courage and victory.

The dance vocabulary is instantly recognisable: the ikinyemera arm movements evoking cattle horns, the amayugi ankle bells, and the leaps of the guhamiriza. Women's umushagiriro is graceful and flowing where the men's is percussive.

Ingoma drumming accompanies the dance in ensembles that once played only for the king. Today troupes such as national and community ballets perform at ceremonies, weddings, and international festivals, carrying the tradition forward.

How to experience it

  • Watch a cultural troupe at a wedding, festival or heritage site.
  • Listen for the call-and-response between drummers and dancers.
  • Notice how arm movements echo the shape of cattle horns.

Respect & etiquette

Ask before filming a private ceremony, and support troupes by booking or tipping where appropriate.
