Memorial sites listed 2023

Rwanda Cultural Heritage Academy oversees a network of national museums. The Ethnographic Museum in Huye holds one of the richest collections of Rwandan artefacts, from baskets, pottery, and drums to tools and traditional dress.

Other sites include the King's Palace Museum in Nyanza, the Campaign Against Genocide Museum at Parliament in Kigali, and museums of art and environment. Genocide memorials, including Kigali Genocide Memorial and sites listed by UNESCO in 2023, invite respectful remembrance.

Opening times, photography rules and entry fees vary by site. Confirm details with the official heritage website before visiting, and dress and behave respectfully at memorials.

How to experience it

  • Plan a southern route: Nyanza then Huye.
  • Allow time for reflection at memorial sites.
  • Ask about guided tours in English, French or Kinyarwanda.

Respect & etiquette

Photography rules differ by site; memorials require quiet, respectful behaviour.
