Nyanza, in Southern Province, was the seat of the Rwandan monarchy in the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The King's Palace Museum includes a reconstruction of the traditional thatched royal residence alongside the later colonial-era palace.
The site is also known for the Inyambo — cattle with remarkably long, curved horns that were bred and cared for at court. Herders traditionally sang praise poems (amazina y'inka) to them, and cattle remain a strong symbol of wealth and friendship in Rwandan culture.
The museum is managed by Rwanda Cultural Heritage Academy. Check its official channels for current opening times and entry charges before you travel.
