Dishes worth trying

Rwandan food is simple, fresh and filling. Most of it is cooked from what grows on the hills around the city.

  • Brochettes — skewered goat or beef, usually with grilled plantain or chips.
  • Isombe — pounded cassava leaves cooked with peanut and palm oil.
  • Tilapia from Lake Kivu, grilled whole with pili-pili (chilli) sauce.
  • Ibihaza — pumpkin cooked with beans.
  • Akabenz — fried pork, a popular evening dish in local bars.

Eating etiquette and practical tips

Service is relaxed — allow time and ask for the bill when ready. Eating while walking in the street is uncommon, so sit down to eat.

Tap water is not recommended; bottled water costs about $0.50. Cards work in established restaurants, but carry cash or mobile money for small places.
