Taxes and Compliance in Rwanda
Corporate tax, VAT, PAYE, social security and the filing calendar businesses must keep.
01 — The main taxes
The main taxes
Companies pay corporate income tax on profits, with reduced rates available to certified investors in priority sectors and to registered exporters. VAT applies to most goods and services above the registration threshold. Employers withhold PAYE and remit social security contributions for staff.
02 — Filing and systems
Filing and systems
Filing and payment run through the Rwanda Revenue Authority's online systems, with electronic invoicing required for VAT-registered businesses. Quarterly prepayments and an annual return are the backbone of the corporate calendar; late filing attracts penalties and interest.
03 — Getting it right
Getting it right
Most foreign-owned SMEs retain a local accounting firm for bookkeeping and filings. Confirm current rates and thresholds with RRA or your adviser before modelling — they are reviewed periodically.
